double wide rope bracelets in color 3232

Double wide refers not to the design of a portable house on a rural lot but instead to the two rope bracelets that are stitched together with brightly colored cotton floss. This small collection is done in the basic primary colors:

bright chrome yellow
turquoise blue
grass green
navy blue
scarlet
The bracelet is constructed of a pair of 2-strand rope bracelets. The material is a heavy #60 cotton cord worked in a classic 3 part weave. The two bracelets are worked to a consistent size on an 8" mold then one is reversed and they are stitched together with the floss.

They come out about 7 1/2" (191 mm) and are a generous width of about 1 1/4" (32 mm)

Bracelet with backbone (the poly clay toggle with the bumps on it) is the focal point of this hand dyed cotton construction. Loops of the cotton cord are placed on the ridges and secured with nylon thread through a series of holes.

The edge-stitching is expressed on the navy blue cord.
Blue black green verdigris yellow tangerine orange
The toggle and loop are easy to flip open. Size is "small" at 7 1/4" (183 mm) when closed.

basket weave bracelet olive taupe and ecru 3204

The high contrast cord colors show off the distinctive spiral pattern created by the double over-under basket weave technique. Only two colors of cord are used leaving the third weave path unpopulated and opening up the texture of the fabric.

This bracelet is narrower than many of the other examples posted at only 2 1/8 (52 mm) wide.

This is built on a 12 loop core of 3 mm soft cotton cord.

green and grey basket weave rope cuff bracelet 3210

The warp cords used in this design are made from  a loosely laid up twisted cotton cord (hardware store variety) combined with a braided cover cord. The colors are a two shades of pastel green and teal combined with a light grey.

The weft cords are tightened compressing the warp cords together and closing the gaps so the weft cords almost disappear. The softer warp cords expand to fill the gaps.
This is a plain weave (single over-under pattern) with only 11 loops (21 crossings)

Made on a 9" mold this cuff is a relaxed 8" (206 mm) inside circumference

red white black basket weave rope cuff bracelet 3207

Nice high contrast bold colored cotton cord assembled in a simple plain weave pattern over a black polyester weft cord.

The red and white cotton cord is a 3 mm soft braided cover cord. The edges have three-pass white cable cord which being slightly smaller diameter creates a tapering effect.
The weave is slightly stretchable from the 7 7/8" (200 mm) inside circumference size. Loose ends are buried inside the weave and tied off with nylon thread.

basket weave rope cuff desert tan and ecru double weave 3202

All cotton materials warp cords are hand dyed a light desert tan and interwoven with natural ecru white cord.

This design has 20 loops creating a 39 crossing count per circumference (there is an offset of one to keep the weave going) Each warp cord follows an over-two under-two pattern. Only two of the three crossing patterns are populated with cord.

You can see the characteristic spiral pattern on the inside of this view. The two colors are very close so the effect is less pronounced. The un-populated crossing pattern reveals the weft cord.
Made on  10 1/2" mold this slip on cuff has been worked up to a smaller 8" (203 mm) inside circumference

blue cotton two layer basket weave rope bracelet 3213

More of the basket weave work this one with a two layer pattern. The single over-under weave is done in an extra soft #48 hand dyed cotton twist mixed colors of pastel blue and grey.

The over 4 - under 2 pattern is done in a light royal blue cord.

The over weave creates a strong horizontal (longitudinal?)  effect.
Ecru weft cords help define the pattern with color contrast. There are four colors used in this design.

Smaller size 7 1/2" (191 mm) with a little bit of natural stretch, not a s much as the bias weave turks head knot bracelets.

basket weave rope bracelet 3206

This simple plain-weave cuff is made with 3 mm cord. These pieces of cord are predominantly blue, purple and verdigris with a bright teal accent. The weft is black polyester.

The weave is drawn up to a firm but not tight tension which allows the loops of cord to show the alternating pattern.
The cords are tied off with waxed thread then trimmed.
Soft and flexible about 8" inside circumference.

ombre dip dyed cord made into a turks head knot rope bracelet 3212

The interesting thing about this design is the cord which was loosely coiled then dip dyed in a blue dye bath then the cord was dip dyed in a grey dye bath and allowed to dry. The overlapping color creates the transition.

The cord was then used to construct a traditional three part sailor bracelet. The areas where the cord was fully immersed in the blue are laid up right next to the grey areas giving this classic design a lively variegated color effect
The cord is a #48 cotton which is a relaxed or loosely laid up product of my local hardware store. It has a light grey toned color right out of the ball so the blue dye comes out a bit more pastel in tone while the grey just looks completely natural.
Built as a sample this is a "small" size (14 part) but the cord can stretch making this a great all purpose bracelet.

blue and white basket weave rope bracelet cuff 3205

This is a very simple basket weave pattern cuff bracelet where the warp cord alternates over and under with the adjacent pass. This creates a relatively thin shell.

The material is an ombre dip-dyed hank of hardware store cotton twine. The warp (running around the circumference of the cuff) is made from the dip dyed cord. The woof (running back and forth along the width of the cuff) is made from un dyed cord from the same ball.
Here you can see the effects of the partially dyed warp cord as it passes around the circumference. The dark blue fades into the natural light grey.

Here's another example of how the ombre cord works in a simple three part turks head knot bracelet.

This plain weave design does not have the same amount of natural stretch as the double weave designs because the fabric has less thickness. The cords don't have the extra space within the body of the fabric.
This cuff was made on a 9 1//2" mold and after the workup now measures 8 1/4" (209 mm) During the layout the cord is loosely arranged to conduct the weaving process then tightened up after all the cords have been placed.
