Turks head knot bracelets and contemporary fiber bracelets

2 button clothesline cuff with beads 1815

The parts for these beaded cuffs come from places like the hardware store (clothesline), the craft store (beads & cord), and the fabric store (dye). The colored cords are scraps left over from the production of the knotted bracelets. Heaps of these have been sitting in a plastic tub for months. It's hard to keep up with the amount of material generated.
The beads are highly irregular and come in a variety of sizes. Many of the larger ones seem to split apart when they are reamed out to get rid of the mold sand. The variety of color and shape are essential to the look of the finished piece.

The center seam has the irregular glass beads. You can see light filtering through like a lantern. The clothesline seams have rows of smooth seed beads worked into them.

The buttons came from a thrift store which is why they are mis-matched.

The whole thing is assembled in sections using four ply waxed nylon thread. You can find this material in the personal care section of a big box retailer. It's dental floss. Very strong, elastic and easily knotted.

The amount of time needed to make these varies. This project sat around for months unfinished while other projects took priority. All together there might the 24 hours or more needed to build the "frame" and infill with cord and beads.

Two herringbone weave rope bracelets were made as part of a custom request. The natural white bracelet is made from a 100% cotton cord in a single strand 34 bight pattern.

The blue-green bracelet is made of a hand dyed 100% cotton cord in a double strand 29 bight pattern.

Both are 7" (178mm) inside circumference and can stretch to fit over and average adult hand.

All cotton materials will shrink when wet.

Custom requests can be placed for a particular size and weave design. Colored cord is made in small batches and has limited availability.

ABoK #1388 (page 251) pattern as transcribed by Norbert printed and mounted on a 10 3/4" circumference cardboard tube. Inside the tube is a foam plastic pool noodle segment that holds the slack cord and provides a mounting point for the spindle. Note the grey and white outlines showing the routing for the two cords required to create this knot.

The knot laid up with two pieces of cord: orange and black. Some of the push pins have been removed for clarity. Extra orange cord is wrapped around he tube on the left.

The black cord is laid out first using the push pins to hold the cord on the pattern. The orange cord is laid out observing the required over and under relationships.

The knot has been partially drawn up and removed from the mold. At this point it resembles a rat's nest and any errors are undetectable.

Knot has been drawn up to a loose but recognizable form and the cords have been doubled. This example contains an error but you can't see it in this photo. According to Ashley "No one is advised to attempt this who does not take his knots seriously." so there...

Rope bracelet with star knot meridian 1738

This is a complex knotted bracelet project that is based on a pattern developed by Norbert Trupiano and posted on Charles Hamel's web in the "Nono Tuts" section. You will have to scroll down to the "Bracelet with Star Knot Meridian" headline to read about this one.

The design is made on a pattern grid that has been printed and then placed on a cardboard tube. The cord is then routed on the pattern using pins to hold the shape until the knot is complete.

The image shows a completed knot made from 1.5 mm white nylon braid that has not yet been worked up to final shape. You can see the reverse loops of the star knot clearly in the second photo.

The pvc mold shown in the photos is about 7 1/8" circumference. The knot was laid out on a 10 3/4" cardboard tube using the pattern grid.

This knot resembles a flat sinnit turks head (ABOK #1379) except that it is not really a turks head in the strict definition.

Here's a closeup of the knot worked up to final shape. You can see the star knot in the center of the weave.

Give your dog (or your friend) the comfort and style of a traditional handwoven collar. This design features a double monkey fist toggle and loop closure. The bright white nylon is sanitary and soft. The weave is flexible and non binding.

This collar is made with two pieces of 1/8" nylon braided cord. The monkey fist knots are tied in the center of each piece, then the collar is woven with the slack ends.

size is 17 1/2" (444 mm). Smaller sizes are available as well.

The four part weave is friendly and flexible and the collar can be washed and sanitized if needed.

I end up with a lot of shorter pieces of cord when making larger more complex weave designs so every now and then just grab the scrap basket and see what's in it.

These are the simplest three part rope bracelets. Everyone knows how to make them, ok well a lot of people do and there are a number of online tutorials available for the do-it-yourselfers.

This is a nice bright green color hand dyed 3 mm soft cotton cord made into a 14 bight bracelet.

My give-away basket gets full over the winter and by the time the next block party rolls around there are a lot of these in different colors and sizes.

Clear glass beads are stitched into the outside edges.

Two loops and a pair of black plastic buttons form a secure closure. This bracelet measures 7" (179 mm) inside circumference and is about 1 1/2" (38 mm) wide.

Blue rope GEOmetry bangle 1449

A wedge section rope bangle bracelet made with very soft blue nylon cord. The white flecks are the four ply waxed nylon binding thread.

This bangle is made in five layers from a single piece of braided cord. Each layer is bound together horizontally then vertically with the nylon thread.

The nylon cord is very soft and low density so this bangle is flexible although it holds it's shape. The stitching creates slight distortions in the circular shape.

This is a one button cuff made with braided cotton piping material and a mix of polyester and hand dyed cotton cord.

The size is a "medium" measuring about 7 1/2" (191 mm) inside circumference when closed.

Red, clear, and amber glass beads are worked into the seams between the cords around the edges.

The toggle closure is a single plastic button and loop. The entire affair is constructed on an 8" plastic mold where the cords are laid out then edge bound together with four ply waxed nylon thread. When the cord fabric is stable the cuff is removed from the mold and the beads are worked into the seams.

This two button cuff is another in the clothesline series made with a grey hand dyed clothesline which forms the ribs and loops in combination with 3 mm hand dyed cotton cord. Glass seed beads are worked into the seams of the large cord. A row of glass beads forms a seam between the two halves of this bracelet. A pair of buttons and loops hold this cuff securely closed.
The colors are grey, green, and black. Bead colors are cobalt, light turquoise, light blue, and a mix of amber, yellow, pink and clear glass in the seam.

This item is available part of a series of clothesline cuffs in the design section of my Zibbet marketplace

The size is a large measuring 8" (204 mm) interior circumference when closed and 2 7/8" (71 mm) wide.
These unique constructions require between 12 -16 hours of work to build. This one was laid out on a PVC pipe mold where the larger cords were formed into the ribs and loops. The smaller diameter cords are laid out in the valleys and hand stitched into a fabric-like pattern. The bracelet is then removed from the mold and the beadwork is completed. This bracelet is made with cotton cord that has been dyed using black walnuts harvested from a neighborhood tree. The color is dense earth tone taupe which is somewhat lighter than the dyebath which was a real black.

The outer husk of the walnuts was mashed and mixed with a small amount of water then boiled according to this recipe from Practical Primitive then used to create a limited amount of black walnut cord. Size is 7" (178 mm) inside diameter.

This is a variation on the clothesline cuff design using a softer cotton cord for the framing cords. This material is softer and less dense than woven clothesline.

In this design there are a series of dark 6 mm wood beads on one side of the cuff and a collection of small glass beads on the other side.

This item is available in my Zibbet marketplace.

The cuff is secured with a pair of plastic buttons.
Size is a "medium" 8" (204 mm) inside circumference. About 2" (50 mm) wide

Colors are purple, rust, yellow and off-white.

3 button toggle cord cuff bracelet with beads 1634

This is a 3 bead toggle cuff made with up cycled cord scraps, a collection of random beads, and a lot more time than I anticipated. This is one of those projects that was laid out on the mold and then for some reason didn't get finished for months. Seems like every time I picked it up I had to do something else so the design sat unrealized until just recently.
In this view you can see the overlapping cords that are actually on the surface. Usually all the cords are bound horizontally with the nylon thread but this design had a lot of loose ends that were laid out on top of the shell and then stitched down.

In this view you can see the random bead collection arranged near the edge of the cuff. This adds texture and a bit more chaos to the already chaotic patterns.

This will fit an average size person measuring 7 1/2" (191 mm) when tugged down snugly. It will expand to about 8 1/4" (208 mm) with the toggle beads fully extended.

This one is extra wide 2 5/8" (68 mm) but it's mostly cotton so it's not uncomfortable to wear...

Here is another of the clothesline cuff collection made with soft braided cotton clothesline, hand dyed cord scraps, wood and glass beads, and a couple of plastic buttons. The clothesline is laid out to form the loops and ridges then the smaller cord is bound in between. A row of lavender glass beads forms a seam in the center. The wood and glass beads are then worked into the seams on the ridges.

The whole process takes some time to complete and depends on the availability of cord scraps and beads.

This cuff measures 7 3/8" (183 mm) inside circumference when closed and is 2 3/8" (63 mm) wide.

New work with white braided clothesline. Two soft slip on style cuffs made in a cylindrical form and one wedge shaped slip on bangle. These came out soft and flexible. The bleached cord is a creamy white color.

All three made from a soft all cotton braided clothesline cord. Binding is four ply nylon thread.

About 8 1/4" (208 mm) inside circumference, the wedge bangle was made on the same mold as the cuffs but shrinks as the outer strands are stitched down to about 7 1/2" (191 mm) inside circumference.

In this group there are two wedge bangles, the larger one is made from a different material which is grey color and has a plastic core.

Prince Edwards' carrack bracelet 1631

This unusual turks head knot bracelet is made from this pattern published by Charles Hamel which was deduced from this piece of sailor's craftwork made in 1925 by HRH Prince George Edward Alexander Edmund, Duke of Kent now held in the knot collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.

Using Charles' pattern mounted on a cardboard tube I made this example out of 3/32" cotton cord.

This is available in my Zibbet marketplace.

You can see that the knot is a plain weave turks head of 7 parts and 8 bights. The carrack bends (there are 8 of them) appear in the inner part of the knot offset from each other. This example is rather loosely tied.

Three button beaded clothesline cuff bracelet 1633

This is one is a series of button cuffs that start out with a length of braided cotton clothesline material. The loops and buttons are set up on the mold then the clothesline is doubled up to create a ridge on both edges and in the center. The colored strands of cord, in this design synthetic, are added and horizontally stitched to the clothesline edges. The two halves are then joined together with the tan colored pattern beads visible next to the center ridge in the top photo. By this time the cuff has taken on a rather stiff shape.

Rows of seed beads are worked into the seams between the clothesline cords on both edges. Two rows of round wooden beads are placed on the inside edges. Finally the ends of the four ply nylon thread are buried and it's finished.

Size is 7" (178 mm) inside circumference when closed. There is about 16 hours of work in this piece.

This is another in the ongoing series of bead encrusted clothesline cuffs. The thick and soft braided clothesline cord forms the ridges that provide seams for the small glass beads. The two halves are joined with the row of heavier black and red glass beads. The contrast of the dark blue cord scraps sets off the bright green and cream beads used at the edges.

This one is a "medium" size measuring 8" (205 mm) inside circumference. Two plastic buttons and cord loops hold this cuff securely closed.

All the materials are water tolerant but this is not designed as pool or beach wear.

Small size plain weave design turks head knot rope bracelet made with olive drab colored parachute cord. This is a highly engineered synthetic cord with a braided cover and a soft multi strand interior very popular with makers of so called "survival bracelets".

In this design the knot has been worked up to a nice and firm shape on a PVC mold and the cord has been evenly tensioned to produce a very flat and somewhat stiff result. The paracord is very smooth and once worked into shape it takes a set that retains the shape of the mold.

This example is a "small" size measuring 7 1/8" (181 mm) inside circumference. The paracord has been tensioned during the work up so there is almost no stretch in this bracelet.

Here's another clothesline cord design made with a lot of beads that were rattling around in the bottom of the bead bucket. On the left is a row of random glass beads tucked into the seam between the center ridge and edge. On the other is a row of dark brown wood beads (life is contrasts). On the center of the ridge is a row of glass seed beads which pick up the light.

Size is medium-small at 7" (180 mm) inside circumference when closed. A two button and loop toggle system ensures easy and secure closure.

Here is another in a continuing series of clothesline fiber art pieces that emerge from the scrap box all covered in beads. This one is a smaller toggle closure style cuff bracelet that uses three buttons and loops to hold it securely closed. The edges are thickened with several passes of the heavier braided cotton cord and rows of small glass beads are stitched in. The two halves are joined together by a row of thicker black beads that resemble round pebbles and add a bit of heft to the piece.

The colors are primarily blues and greens with the natural off-white clothesline cord framing the edges.

Size is "small" when closed 6 5/8" (168 mm) inside circumference. A bath or shower may make this shrink a bit although it's not intended as beach wear.

four bead toggle cuff in white cotton 1542

This is a very simple cuff made with braided white cotton cord and purple sparkle beads.

Nine passes of cord are bound together with four ply nylon thread on a mold. The size is "small" in this example but of course this design can be made in almost any size with your choice of colors.

The beads pop through the loops to open.

four button clothesline ankle cuff 1596

Got to messing around with the scrap bin and some cotton clothesline material and before you know it hand a proper tangle of loops and bits arranged on one of my bigger molds. This ankle cuff was assembled in four parts (one for each of the button loops) then tied together. The beads are placed in the seams between the button loops except for the ridge of seed beads which were applied after the whole thing was assembled.

This is large. Size is 10" (253 mm) inside circumference and 2 5/8" (68 mm) to 2 3/4" (71 mm) wide.

The four buttons hold this anklet closed and are easy to pop through the loops which are a cotton cord. (clothesline actually) hence the name.

This is a unique piece of rather substantial proportions but lightweight 2.7 oz (78 g)

muted collection now speaking softly on Etsy

The title of this collection may be muted but the artists deserve a louder shout-out.

I'm fond of this New York Art Print in watercolor, Empire State, architectural sketch which is offered by Suhita Shirodkar through her shop SketchAway. It has a nice loose colorful style that animates the Manhattan skyline. You can also follow her collection on Flickr.

I also was drawn to this fuzzy felted bluish grey wool bowl with shades of blue flowers offered by sharon through her shop thefuzzymonkey. She has a lot more of these felted colorful wonders with all kinds of words, hearts, and other decorations.

These colors are achieved using an unbleached cotton cord in a dilute dye bath. No two batches ever seem to come out the same making these pieces real limited editions. A few Things Found in the Fog collection by ShellyJarvisArtistry a small but diverse assembly made by Shelly Jarvis from Windsor VT. Check out her Etsy shop where she creates usable, functioning objects, from whimsical to classical designs.
