4 wrap handmade rope bracelet with button 3297

More hand manufactured cotton rope this time featuring a wrapped loop. The wrapping is waxed thread otherwise used for stitching leather shoes and other projects. It is a nice heavy gauge, quite strong and develops a pleasing texture when used in this way.

The rope is a 4-ply construction (hence the two hole button). (More information on the rope machine to be published later.)
This is a thicker two hole poly clay button cut like a cookie then baked (also like a cookie) but unfortunately not edible.

As with the other pieces in this series the button is placed in the rope machine with the yarns threaded through the holes. As the rope is formed  by twisting the button becomes the termination point.

Shown here as a four wrap bracelet this piece can also be a longer length necklace. About 7 1/2" (191 mm )with four wraps or 35" (889 mm) in a single loop.

Cord color is an off-white the poly clay button is a marbled composite of white grey and tan.

double loop handmade rope necklace 3311

This handmade rope was made in an extended length on the table top rope machine. The extra length allows for a double loop with a generous dimension of 20 1/2" (520 mm)

The rope is a three ply construction in a natural color cotton twine.
The closure us a three hole custom made poly clay button and loop. The loop doubles the cord and is bound with a waxed thread coach whipping detail.

The cord is terminated with another  coach whipping detail.
Double coil results in a 9 1/2" (241 mm) wrap bracelet, rather large for the average adult wrist...

handmade rope choker necklace with button 3310

Three ply rope manufactured on a small rope machine out of cotton twine is combined with a custom made three hole button to create this small choker style necklace.

Size is "small" about 14 1/2" (368 mm)

Three hole button anchors the three pairs of cotton twine. The button is positioned on the inactive end of the rope machine while the yarns are wound up.
The loop is created by a simple coach whipping made with waxed cotton thread.

color is a natural cotton white, button is a "pearl white" poly clay

handmade rope wrap bracelet necklace 3298

What makes this piece special is the rope is actually assembled on a rope machine from cotton yarns in a two-stage process.

The first stage creates a thin cotton cord from three plies of cotton twine. The second stage uses three of these cords to create the rope shown here.

                 available here

The handmade poly clay button is placed on the inactive end of the rope winding machine with the cord threaded through the holes in the button.  As the rope is made the button is secured by the natural twist in the yarns

The loop is made with an eye-splice detail with a coach whipping securing the end of the splice. This is a traditional method of creating open loops that can carry heavy loads imposed by rigging on sailing ships.
The extra length creates a four wrap bracelet for a large wrist, five wrap for a small wrist. Two wraps makes a nautical choker style necklace or leave the single loop for an extra long draped necklace.

Color is a natural off-white, material is cotton.

yellow rope bracelets 2863

This collection of knotted bracelets is made from a very soft and flexible synthetic cord. As you can see the color is a bright yellow with red and blue thread accents. The red and blue are actually individual strands of the woven sheath which surrounds the core.

This material came from a big-box retailer and is a 9/16" diameter made with a soft fiber core so it is very soft to the touch and quite flexible.

On the left is the single strand design minimal profile only 1/2" (13 mm) wide.

In the center is the two strand design a bit more substantial at 1 1/8" (28 mm) but very soft and stretchy.

On the right is the symmetrical three part three strand design a full 1 3/4" (33 mm) wide.

Available from extra small to extra large. This group measures between 6 1/2" (165 mm) to 7" (178 mm)

You can choose size and width when you order

knotted adjustable rope bracelet 2575

This knotted rope bracelet design uses several old-school marlinspike techniques to produce an adjustable rope bracelet. This design is made from a piece of cotton cord that has been hand dyed in a backyard recipe of black walnut hulls. These are the annoying green and brown shards that squirrels leave behind to stain your driveway or sidewalk with their pungent and powerful dye that leaches out during rainstorms.

Here's one made in white cord.
On one end of the cord is a 2x2x2 monkey fist knot tied without a core. A larger version of this knot is often used to make a weighted heaving line that can be thrown across a gap between ships and then used to haul a heavier piece of line across the gap.

There are a pair of sliding barrel knots on either side of the reverse loops that secure the adjustment with a high friction grip. You can draw the running part thought he knot but it requires a bit of effort so this knot will hold the line in position where you leave it.
The third technique is the brown waxed whipping that secures the loop and the loose end of the monkey fist. The whipping has a concealed loop that buries the live end under the whipping making it appear that there are no loose ends. The extra length has been trimmed off to preserve the illusion. Here's a link, scroll down to "method 2" to see how this one is made.

three wrap rope bracelet or necklace design 2284

Received a special request to make a wrap around  style rope bracelet from a customer who liked the look of the rope grommet bracelets and wanted something more contemporary. White can be a difficult color to keep looking clean, her choice was grey a color that is very complementary.

Find a similar design here in the Etsy shop.
The materials are a hand dyed grey cotton cord and waxed cotton thread.

The design starts with a 3x3x3 monkey fist button knot. The extra length cords are then worked into a traditional twisted rope. This process is done on a jig. The end loops are wrapped around a pin on the jig and secured with the waxed cotton whipping thread.

The loose ends are laid parallel and secured with another whipping.

This design works as a three-wrap bracelet for a smaller wrist (about 6 3/4") and can also be used as a choker style necklace. The overall length is about 19".

grey grommet group 1833

A group of grey grommets made with hand dyed grey #60 cotton cord and finished with white waxed linen whipping.

A grommet is a round endless ring made from rope that is about five times as along as the circumference of the finished grommet. Read more about these interesting and useful knots on WikiHow or try this netplaces knot site article by Randy Penn. The traditional grommet is made from manila or other natural fiber rope. A length is "un-layed" then woven back together in a circular form.
These cotton grommets are made from cotton cord that is intact not the "un-layed" condition. The overlapping ends are bound up using another traditional marlinspike seamanship technique known as whipping. Ropeworks offers a clear diagram for several types of whipping methods. These are made using "method 3" (scroll down to see it)

You can find grommet bracelets like these in WhatKnotShop on Etsy.

white rope GEOmetry bracelets 1639, 1640, 1641, 1642

New work with white braided clothesline. Two soft slip on style cuffs made in a cylindrical form and one wedge shaped slip on bangle. These came out soft and flexible. The bleached cord is a creamy white color.

White cotton soft bangle 1639 now listed on Etsy.
All three made from a soft all cotton braided clothesline cord. Binding is four ply nylon thread.

About 8 1/4" (208 mm) inside circumference, the wedge bangle was made on the same mold as the cuffs but shrinks as the outer strands are stitched down to about 7 1/2" (191 mm) inside circumference.
In this group there are two wedge bangles, the larger one is made from a different material which is grey color and has a plastic core.

The large wedge bangle is available in my Zibbet marketplace.

Prince Edwards' carrack bracelet 1631

This unusual turks head knot bracelet is made from this pattern published by Charles Hamel which was deduced from this piece of sailor's craftwork made in 1925 by  HRH Prince George Edward Alexander Edmund, Duke of Kent now held in the knot collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.

Using Charles' pattern mounted on a cardboard tube I made this example out of 3/32" cotton cord.

This is available in my Zibbet marketplace.
You can see that the knot is a plain weave turks head of 7 parts and 8 bights. The carrack bends (there are 8 of them) appear in the inner part of the knot offset from each other. This example is rather loosely tied.
Here are a few more patterns by Don Wright also courtesy of Charles' web site:

black 14 string cord bracelet 1189

Very simple design of fourteen loops of cord with a switchback pattern. The nylon thread compresses the folded loops which forms a pattern not unlike interlocking fingers. No beads just soft cord.

Made around a mold out of polyester cord. The larger loops that form the bracelet are relaxed. This is a slip-on style so no buttons or clasps.
Similar design made in white cotton cord and another black string cuff bracelet with similar detailing

large rope bracelets

This design is made with large size cotton clothesline cord which makes for a gigantic size bracelet. In this example the material is worked in a 4 part by 5 bight design. This oversize look is available from Tanya Aguiniga with hand dyed color accents.

Those of you that would like one or more of these for your own craft projects (dip dying or other work) please request a custom order via this link  custom order

Even though this looks huge the material is lightweight and quite soft. This cord comes with a synthetic core that can be left in place or removed by cutting the cord and drawing the core out with a small pair of pliers.

This material is an off-white more natural looking cotton made in a braided pattern around the core.
