Kid stuff - three styles made especially for children 1292

A Michigan mom wanted some gifts for her kids and requested three very different designs all made extra small to fit over tiny hands.
Upper left is a black multi strand cord bracelet with red beads similar to this item in the Etsy shop. A wilder version of this design can be seen here.
On the right is a grey and white turks head knot bracelet which is a replica of this adult sized bracelet also available in wider designs like this one or in a medium width design.
In the center is a square knot macrame bracelet with a green glass bead very similar to this one. Other slip-on style macrame bracelets can be seen here on the blog or visit the square knot bracelets section of the Zibbet shop.

white macrame toggle bracelet with monkey fist knot 1203

Macrame (square knot) toggle bracelet made with 2.3 mm white nylon cord. This is a classic square knot pattern made with a single piece of cord. First a 3 x 3 x 3 monkey fist knot is made in the center of the cord and firmed up. The remaining cord is double looped and the knotting pattern begins at the base of the monkey fist. The ends are stitched to prevent unraveling. Finished size is 7 3/8" (186 mm).
The loop ends are designed to pass through the space between the monkey fist and the start of the braid, then loop back over the monkey fist. This makes the closure more secure and allows easy removal.

Square knot macrame soft bangle bracelets

This is an old favorite design using a basic square knot pattern familiar to many people as macrame. Back in the 70's this was a popular craft. This little collection is slip on style bracelets made with cotton cord. The core is four strands of cotton cable cord. These are made on a circular mold and the ends are stitched up with nylon thread so they don't fall apart

square knot cotton bangle bracelets made with small cotton cord

Being away from the knot shop studio forced me to try some new (old) techniques using much smaller diameter cord.

Here's a stack of cotton bangles made from #18 cotton cord using a familiar macrame knotting technique.

All of these are made the same diameter 2 3/8" but the technique can be used on a limitless number of molds in various sizes to suit the need.

Start with about 12' of cord.
Thread a small wood bead and place it at the center of the doubled cord.

Wrap the doubled cord around a mold, in this case a PVC coupling, reverse the working ends and tie the first square knot.

This creates a four strand core which is then used to support a series of square knots. These knots create the diagonal crossing pattern seen on the left.

Working the knots around the core and keeping an even tension brings the work back to the starting point. Final knot is placed snug against the bead and the loose ends are pulled tight.

A bit of nylon floss secures the cotton cord and enables the loose ends to be cut without fear of unraveling.
