green and grey basket weave rope cuff bracelet 3210

The warp cords used in this design are made from  a loosely laid up twisted cotton cord (hardware store variety) combined with a braided cover cord. The colors are a two shades of pastel green and teal combined with a light grey.

The weft cords are tightened compressing the warp cords together and closing the gaps so the weft cords almost disappear. The softer warp cords expand to fill the gaps.
This is a plain weave (single over-under pattern) with only 11 loops (21 crossings)

Made on a 9" mold this cuff is a relaxed 8" (206 mm) inside circumference

blue green double weave rope bracelet cuff 3200

Three mm white cotton cord is laid out on a mold then interwoven with three separate hand dyed colors.

The weave is a simple right angle pattern passing over two then under two. Each color is offset one step.

Cords are tensioned around the mold to an even but not tight shape.
The offset of one step per color creates the subtle spiral pattern composed of the three color combination.
The white weft cords are gently drawn up to make the edges of the bracelet even. Loose ends are stitched with waxed nylon thread and trimmed off.

square knot cotton bangle bracelets made with small cotton cord

Being away from the knot shop studio forced me to try some new (old) techniques using much smaller diameter cord.

Here's a stack of cotton bangles made from #18 cotton cord using a familiar macrame knotting technique.

All of these are made the same diameter 2 3/8" but the technique can be used on a limitless number of molds in various sizes to suit the need.

Start with about 12' of cord.
Thread a small wood bead and place it at the center of the doubled cord.

Wrap the doubled cord around a mold, in this case a PVC coupling, reverse the working ends and tie the first square knot.

This creates a four strand core which is then used to support a series of square knots. These knots create the diagonal crossing pattern seen on the left.

Working the knots around the core and keeping an even tension brings the work back to the starting point. Final knot is placed snug against the bead and the loose ends are pulled tight.

A bit of nylon floss secures the cotton cord and enables the loose ends to be cut without fear of unraveling.

Black Turks head bracelet with red beads

Beading is a huge craft phenomenon with thousands if not millions of people all over the world creating unique craft objects. Knotting is another ancient art and it's relationship to beading is probably just as old. Combining these two traditions to create new forms is part of what makes the exploration of craft expressions so much fun. At left is a bracelet that combines both a Turks Head weave with glass beads to produce a simple high impact look. Black cord is worked in a 17 x 5 x 2 pattern with red glass pony beads. This and other color combinations are available through the online shops listed below.
