4 button fiber cuff bracelet 1191

This is a project that started then got put aside for awhile then finally was finished. The concept is to create an organic "bark" that wraps around the wrist much the way a tree protects the fragile xylem layers with a resilient coating. The materials are hand dyed cotton cord, four plastic buttons obtained at a thrift store, six irregular glass beads, and four ply nylon thread.

The buttons and loops are offset so the seams are highly irregular. There is an opening near the center formed by the pulling away of the cord bundles during the assembly process. Another "hole" is filled with the glass beads.

Open the bracelet by releasing the buttons from the loops.

Built on a 7 1/2" mold this piece is a "small" size inside but varies from 2 5/8" to 3 1/4" wide.

The colors are a mix of greens, greys, blues, with purple, black and magenta red.  The texture is firm but friendly. Most of the cords are hand dyed cotton.

Six irregular glass beads cluster like eggs in a nest.

This item is available here in the design section of my Etsy shop.

three button fiber cuff bracelet medium 1062

Three grey plastic buttons and loops set in a diagonal pattern form a secure toggle closure for this up cycled rope bracelet. The photo to the left shows the closed position with the loops and buttons. Size is a "medium" measuring 7 1/2"(191 mm) inside circumference.
Colors are grey, blues, and black with purple, tan and yellow cord accents worked into the weave. The cords are bound together with four ply nylon thread which creates a compression that squeezes the soft cotton and synthetic cords into a stiff curved shape. Bracelet is flexible to open and close. Texture is comfortable and will improve with long term wear.
This photo shows the buttons disengaged from the loops. Each button is securely stitched to the cord with nylon thread.

tangled string bracelet in green and pink 930

A riot of pink, green, and other colors all tangled up with someplace to go. This is a special design for one of my awesome customers who liked the combination of lime green and fuchsia pink.

Little heart shaped bunny ears hold the purple plastic toggle beads in place.
A framework weave made of fuchsia cords sets the size at 7" inside circumference.

Double loops hold the toggle beads in place when closed.

This bracelet is very soft and flexible but is held together with four ply nylon thread so it is also durable.

Water will not harm this bracelet but might make it shrink somewhat.

Multiple strands of blue, green, teal, black, and sky cords are combined with irregular beads to form a unique organic style cuff bracelet. Inspired by the many forms and random juxtapositions of creatures and rock formations found along the shore this piece captures the curious spirit of marine life.
Two large glass beads and loops create the toggle closure. Closed size is approx. 8" (203 mm) inside circumference.

The multi colored glass beads worked into the structure of the fabric set off the basic color scheme with both texture and color.

adjustable anemone bracelet

This is the original anemone cuff bracelet design made from up-cycled bits of colored cord. The diameter is fixed as the nylon threads that bind the cords run in a circular pattern. The bracelet is made on a mold which sets the finished internal circumference.

This item is available on Etsy click here

Extra wide with the frayed ends fanned out just like the tentacles on the real anemones found in the ocean. A mix of colored cords was used in this prototype.

This is the new design which is adjustable to fit extra small wrists of about 6" or so on up to the larger 8" size.

The same design is used except the binding thread is not continuous but creates an opening to allow size adjustment.

A uniquely designed beaded toggle enables the continuous adjustment from small to extra large.

In this view the small dark bead center bottom is placed through a loop of the black cord. The bead slides on the loop of blue cord to adjust the fit.

The two other dark beads can rest inside their own loops when the bracelet is adjusted to the small size  or they simply ride on the closure loops.
Colors are a mixture of blue, turquoise, green, and grey. All cotton cords are hand dyed and stitched with 4 ply nylon thread. Beads are made of dark glass. Cotton floss is used to detail the stress points.

Here is the bracelet opened up showing the toggle beads and the loop fully extended.

frayed work in progress part II 551

Another run at putting fiber together in a bundle. This time the cords run "up and down" with the nylon thread going "round and round" (that's technical language)

On the mold there were loops where the colored cord reversed direction. These have been cut to enable the natural softness of the cord to express through the fray. Some core color plus the dyed sheath color come through.

The ends are loosened up and bushed out to thicken and soften the edges. Looks like more fray is a good thing.

Technical challenges include consistent threading of the nylon thread through all the cords, shrinkage of the cords as they are compressed creating gaps in the surface, and routing of the nylon thread.

The nylon thread makes for zero stretch or pretty close to it. This one is made on a 7 5/8" mold so it's a "medium" size for someone with skinny hands.

Like all the other design )strata( series this is made from up cycled materials. Also, it's green. no really look closely!

cotton fiber bracelet w toggle & beads design )strata( 311

Toggle closure design )strata( series cotton fiber bracelet with beads sticking out everywhere. This is not smooth. It has attitude.

There is a long loose end with a glass bead for a toggle stop. It looks like a tail.

It measures 7 1/2" inside circumference so it would be a comfortable anklet for someone with skinny feet or a bracelet for someone with large size wrist.

Pulling this one together with nylon thread got the beds and cotton cords to do the chummy wrap around liquidy thing so that it look like it was grown instead of assembled.
