extra wide two button ribbed cuff bracelet with wood beads 2644

Here's another cuff made with the edge binding system from cotton cords and a string of wooden beads. The design uses two one button bracelets made with the same colored cords and adds the 10 mm wooden beads in the center.

Read the one button bracelet tutorial here to see how the pieces are made.

In this bracelet the framing cords are 1/4" line which is thicker than the infill cords and creates a series of ribs.

Here you can see the dimples made by the tensioned edge binding thread.

The wood beads are stitched in between the ribs after the two one-button segments are complete using the thickness of the framing cord to hide the stitching.

Here's a design without the thicker framing cords
two button rainbow bead cuff rope bracelet 2643
I think the ribbing adds a nice definition to the edge of this cuff. The single grey infill cord sets off the more earthy brown of the beads.

anticlastic cuff bracelet with glass beads modern relic artifact 1679

A button and loop toggle cuff bracelet made with layers of hand dyed cord and dozens of mixed glass beads. The heavier grey cord frames the dark green and teal center cords.

Clear glass beads are stitched into the outside edges creating light catching movement. Pale blue glass beads are worked into the seams of the clothesline cord on the inside edges.
Two loops and a pair of black plastic buttons form a secure toggle closure.

the geometry:
7" (179 mm) inside circumference
1 1/2" (38 mm) wide.

This is one of the design )strata( series of clothesline cuffs available in the WhatKnotShop on Zibbet

ecru and teal two button cuff 1393

This design )strata( cotton cuff is made entirely out of natural and hand dyed cotton cable cord. The colors selected are white, off white, teal, and grey-green.  A pair of green plastic buttons and loops hold this cuff closed. As you can see the loops are positioned more than half way around the cuff creating a diagonal seam. The fabric is made by binding the cord strands together with strong but elastic nylon thread. This compresses the cords as the thread is tensioned which stiffens the material enabling the distinctive organic shape to appear. The twisted cords create the ribbed appearance of the fabric.
This piece measures about 8" (203 mm) inside circumference when closed and about 2" (52 mm) wide. This cuff will change shape when you put it on and if you get it wet it will shrink somewhat as it is made from cotton.

See this unique cuff and a collection of similar designs in the design section of the Etsy shop. See a much larger collection in the design section of the Zibbet shop.

cotton cord fabric cuff bracelet with glass beads 1231

A pair of blue plastic buttons and loops hold the corners of this organic collection of cord and beads. Multiple mixed fiber cords are laid out then stitched together with a collection of irregular glass beads. The binding process compresses the cords together and the beads are embedded in the layers. Two opposing loops overlap with a seam of turquoise bubble beads between them. Cotton floss is applied to the edges to highlight the structure. This is one of the design )strata( series of fabric cord bracelets.
This view shows the buttons and loops.  The four ply nylon binder remains in constant state of tension holding the cords and beads firmly in position. This is a medium-small size measuring 7" (178 mm) circumference when closed.
This and other unique fiber art items are available in the design section of the Etsy shop.

two button day-night beaded fiber cuff bracelet 1205

One side is white and green with a row of light glass beads in the center. The other side is black and purple with a row of cobalt beads. These meet in the center where the cords overlap with a layer of green glass beads. A pair of green plastic buttons secures the toggle loops.

Here the milky white glass beads can be seen on the back. The dark night in front. About 7 1/2" (191 mm) inside circumference when closed.

Cotton floss binds the overlapping edge, green beads are hidden in the depths. One of the unique design )strata( series cord fiber bracelets made from up cycled cord scraps and found beads.

red cord fabric double toggle cuff bracelet w beads 1199

This is a double monkey fist knot and loop closure cuff in bright colors. The cords are a mix of hand dyed cotton and synthetics. There are three different textures: the smooth cotton Darice cord that are the red, orange, blue and yellow colors; the cotton cable cord which is the yellow and purple color; braided synthetics colors electric green and light blue.
The monkey fists are tied in a pair and the cord is wrapped around to form the toggle loops. The entire structure is "post tensioned" with nylon thread which stretches then compresses the cords and makes a stiff shell our of the cord forming a fabric. Three glass beads accent the piece.

Size is a "small" measuring 7 1/4" (184 mm) circumference.
This design is similar to a number of other design )strata( bracelets like this double button cuff and this three button cuff and this double toggle beaded cuff  although these designs use buttons and large beads as toggles.

All these are unique designs which share similar details.

4 button fiber cuff bracelet 1191

This is a project that started then got put aside for awhile then finally was finished. The concept is to create an organic "bark" that wraps around the wrist much the way a tree protects the fragile xylem layers with a resilient coating. The materials are hand dyed cotton cord, four plastic buttons obtained at a thrift store, six irregular glass beads, and four ply nylon thread.

The buttons and loops are offset so the seams are highly irregular. There is an opening near the center formed by the pulling away of the cord bundles during the assembly process. Another "hole" is filled with the glass beads.

Open the bracelet by releasing the buttons from the loops.

Built on a 7 1/2" mold this piece is a "small" size inside but varies from 2 5/8" to 3 1/4" wide.

The colors are a mix of greens, greys, blues, with purple, black and magenta red.  The texture is firm but friendly. Most of the cords are hand dyed cotton.

Six irregular glass beads cluster like eggs in a nest.

This item is available here in the design section of my Etsy shop.

cotton fiber cuff - custom work

Recently I received a request from a person who wanted a wider version of a design )strata( bracelet purchased previously. This project started out to replicate the colors used in the original in a wider finished size.

Getting consistent color from my small batch dye lots is a significant challenge. I use standardized recipes for the dye baths but there are a number of other variables that control the outcome:  Length of time the  cord spends immersed in the dye bath, the rinse-out process including the temperature of the rinse water and the length of time in the rinse; and of course the absorption characteristics of the cord.

The creation of this design also involves layout of the cord and the binding process which compresses the cord together. This compression reduces the width by about 50% so a 1" wide finished bracelet starts out at about 2" on the mold.

The finished piece came out a bit narrower than I wanted but the results are I think rather pleasing. Greys, white, pink, and a yellow accent are subdued but interesting and the compression process enables the bracelet to hold it's shape.

You can see more of this type of work in the design section of the Etsy shop and a much larger selection on ArtFire and Zibbet as well.

Double button cuff bracelet with beads 1067

This design uses two small grey plastic buttons secured to opposite corners of cord fabric engaging loops to form a closure system. The cord fabric is composed of hand dyed scraps of both the 3 mm plain cotton cord and the twisted cotton cable cord. I added a few colorful beads to fill the open spaces in the end loops.
Colors are browns and reds framed in a black perimeter loop with a green and purple accent here and there. The nylon thread compresses the cords to a nice tight shape. Size is "medium" 7 1/2" (193 mm) inside circumference.

tangled string bracelet in green and pink 930

A riot of pink, green, and other colors all tangled up with someplace to go. This is a special design for one of my awesome customers who liked the combination of lime green and fuchsia pink.

Little heart shaped bunny ears hold the purple plastic toggle beads in place.
A framework weave made of fuchsia cords sets the size at 7" inside circumference.

Double loops hold the toggle beads in place when closed.

This bracelet is very soft and flexible but is held together with four ply nylon thread so it is also durable.

Water will not harm this bracelet but might make it shrink somewhat.
