 Inspired by the traditional bracelets produced by ancient cultures from the femurs of cows and other animals this replica has all the heft and texture of tradition with a modern sensibility. The organic form is bisected with a thin geometrically perfect line that emphasizes the tension between the free form shape and the machine made world where the materials originated.

Hand carved from laminated PVC pipe and finished with subtle polish that brings out the textured surface with all the small variations.

 Measuring only 5 1/2" (140 mm) inside circumference this bracelet would be worn by a child or small adult. The smoothly polished interior surface resembles an ancient artifact that might have been in use for generations.

A little stack of little bracelets created from thermoplastic but shaped and finished to resemble traditional horn, ivory, or bone materials often used by traditional cultures. Since the illegal ivory trade is destroying the elephant population in Africa it is important to find alternative materials that can offer similar properties to recreate traditional forms.

Stacked this collection is less than 1" high.

Composed of four slightly oval shaped pieces these bangles are made from white PVC plastic. Cut from a section of round pipe and then shaped to remove the edges the finishing reveals the pure white color of the material.

Progressive treatment with fine sand paper creates a matte surface. Final polishing with felt media brings out the textured surface with highlights.

Using a thicker cord and a variety of buttons this series of fishtail braid bracelets takes shape. These are big chunky wrist wrappers (risk rappers?). The braid is often used by women with long hair and searching on the term "fishtail braid" will confirm this, however it is also a useful technique to make these bracelets (no hair involved).

eroded PVC bangle 3672

Starting with the solid PVC material enables the erosion of the basic form by degrees to get at shapes that are hidden inside. Unlike the lightweight pvc that has the low density core this solid material has the same density throughout. The resulting forms have a continuous shape without edges or contour lines.

This example has an eroded edge working against the circular form to create a slightly asymmetrical shape.

 The circular side has a flared interior transition to the edge.

Here the tension between the erosion and the circular can be seen clearly.

tan and sand double thickness basket weave rope bracelet cuff 3201

 This cuff turned out to be a bit larger measuring about 8" inside circumference but it seems much bigger due to the double weave construction. The opposing loops give this slip on bracelet a nice thickness. It's quite lightweight made from natural and hand dyed cotton cord.

 Here you can see the three colors in offset loops that set up the characteristic spiral pattern common to all the double weave designs. To get the spiral expressed all three of the offsetting loops must be placed or else the definition is lost.

The other innovation here is all the loose ends are turned 90 degrees and buried in the weave. Makes one of the overpassing loops a bit wider than the others but avoids all the tie-offs necessary when the loose ends are terminated at random points.

This one measures a full 2 5/8" (69 mm) wide so it really is a big wide cuff.
