dip dyed rope bracelets 3984

A small collection of knotted rope bracelets edge dyed in yellow and scarlet. The cord is a nice thick braided cotton with an open porous weave which accepts the water based dye quite readily.

The bracelets are 11x3x3 plain weave design measuring about 6 1/4" (158 mm) circumference.
The first dye bath was the yellow color. The bracelets were placed in a shallow pan and the dye then absorbed upwards into the edge of the bracelet. After a period of time the bracelets were removed and placed on a drying rack.

The second dye bath is the scarlet. The red is a heavier more opaque color. The damp cord absorbed the red dye easily - too easily as you can see places where the red just about covered all the yellow.
24 hours on the drying rack and these bracelets are finished. These have not been rinsed out to avoid further merging of the colors so some dye transfer may occur.

Custom work like this in your choice of colors may be requested.

the royal navy dip dye pair special project 3823

Blue is the color of the oceans as seen from space and is also the subject of this dip-dye project. The two colors are very British: Royal (blue) and Navy (blue) hence the clever title of the post…

Top bracelet is the royal blue
Bottom bracelet is the navy blue

base material is off-white 100% cotton cord

more information about the hand dyed process

and even more background on dying cotton cord

Harder to see the color difference when the two are separated. The royal is a "bluer" blue with a bright graduated color. The navy is a more purple darker tone.

Both were immersed for about 20 minutes then left to dry before rinsing to help set the color.

crazy extra wide cuff with three colors

The ombre effect is limited in this pair. The dye did not creep up the fibers as much as expected.

ombre dip dyed cord made into a turks head knot rope bracelet 3212

The interesting thing about this design is the cord which was loosely coiled then dip dyed in a blue dye bath then the cord was dip dyed in a grey dye bath and allowed to dry. The overlapping color creates the transition.

The cord was then used to construct a traditional three part sailor bracelet. The areas where the cord was fully immersed in the blue are laid up right next to the grey areas giving this classic design a lively variegated color effect
The cord is a #48 cotton which is a relaxed or loosely laid up product of my local hardware store. It has a light grey toned color right out of the ball so the blue dye comes out a bit more pastel in tone while the grey just looks completely natural.
Built as a sample this is a "small" size (14 part) but the cord can stretch making this a great all purpose bracelet.

Dip dyed nylon turks head bracelets 1693

Nylon braided cord that has had the core fibers removed leaving only the outer braid dip dyed in a navy blue dye bath. This renders the cord very soft and flexible.

The color infuses the nylon fibers in a progressive gradient from dark blue to light blue to white

Size is "small" (6 3/8 in/163 mm) stretch is minimal to about 7 in/178 mm
