the royal navy dip dye pair special project 3823

Blue is the color of the oceans as seen from space and is also the subject of this dip-dye project. The two colors are very British: Royal (blue) and Navy (blue) hence the clever title of the post…

Top bracelet is the royal blue
Bottom bracelet is the navy blue

base material is off-white 100% cotton cord

more information about the hand dyed process

and even more background on dying cotton cord

Harder to see the color difference when the two are separated. The royal is a "bluer" blue with a bright graduated color. The navy is a more purple darker tone.

Both were immersed for about 20 minutes then left to dry before rinsing to help set the color.

crazy extra wide cuff with three colors

The ombre effect is limited in this pair. The dye did not creep up the fibers as much as expected.

even more even part turks head knot bracelets 3514

Four part rope bracelets are the next order of complexity up from the traditional three part sailor bracelets and they offer a special design opportunity. The center overlap creates a place to run a colored accent cord through the void in the weave. Because the geometry of the knot has even parts the overlap falls in the actual center not to one side or the other.

Here are some other colors in this same design.
Here is the tutorial showing how to tie four part bracelets.
15x4x2 weave design with tangerine (a popular color!)

7 1/2" (191 mm) circumference a convenient size for many people
Purple - mysterious just like the endless knot pattern...

Note that these are 15 bight designs. If you tie an 11 bight design as shown in the tutorial your bracelet will come out smaller. If you increase to 19 bights it will be larger.

Quiz: why does the bight count increase by 4 each time?
Scarlet - "red is best" and popular!

Almost any color can be used to accent the basic off-white bracelet.
Navy - a traditional favorite color for anything nautical

double wide rope bracelets in color 3232

Double wide refers not to the design of a portable house on a rural lot but instead to the two rope bracelets that are stitched together with brightly colored cotton floss. This small collection is done in the basic primary colors:

bright chrome yellow
turquoise blue
grass green
navy blue
scarlet
The bracelet is constructed of a pair of 2-strand rope bracelets. The material is a heavy #60 cotton cord worked in a classic 3 part weave. The two bracelets are worked to a consistent size on an 8" mold then one is reversed and they are stitched together with the floss.

They come out about 7 1/2" (191 mm) and are a generous width of about 1 1/4" (32 mm)

walnut taupe seasonal color collection 3061

Fall season refers to the action of black walnut trees in my neighborhood. The ripe walnuts drop from the branches and I have to compete with the grey squirrels to gather them up.

Read more about this annual ritual in this posting.

Find out how the dye process works in this posting.
This collection is made from genuine organic locally harvested black walnuts that have been processed into a colorfast dye then used to make this handsome cotton cord.

Here's three three-part traditional sailor bracelets made in sizes large, medium, and small.

Above is a wider five part weave size small.
DIY kits are also available and for a limited time larger quantities of hand dyed cord are also available by special order.

Check my Etsy shop for these and other seasonal designs.

beaded turks head knot bracelet 2944

A basic three part turks head knot bracelet that has been built using a center strand of ceramic 3 mm beads. These beads are more subdued in appearance than the clear or colored glass.

The beads are strung on a rugged four ply nylon thread and worked through the center of the bracelet. Check this blog posting to see how the center strand is added to complete the bracelet.
The opaque beads give a more substantial look to the bracelet and match the tan colored cotton cord.

Size for this one is "large" 8 1/2" (211 mm) partly due to the presence of the beads. They don't compress the same way that a center strand made of cord would so the overall size tends to increase.

This is a prototype that can be produced in a variety of sizes and colors. If interested please leave a comment or email.

nylon hybrid weave turks head knot bracelet 2760

Two weave patterns are combined in this interesting knot bracelet: Each edge has a herringbone (over 2-under 2) pattern which then shifts to a plain weave in the center.

This design is a "square" turks head with 14 bights and 15 parts.

Here is a related wider design.

The material is a 1/8" high density braided nylon cord which is a nice bright white color. This material is easy to work in the knot and unlike cotton tends to hold it's size without shrinking.

size relaxed:
7" (178 mm) inside circumference
2 1/4" (55 mm) inside diameter
2 3/4" (96 mm) wide

will stretch slightly to about 7 1/2"
The weave pattern is:
U2-O2-u1-o1-u1-o1-u1-o1-U2-O2 which has been doubled to bulk up the size.

hybrid weave turks head knot bracelet white nylon 2758

This is a 14 bight x 15 part x 2 strand compound or hybrid weave turks head knot made with ordinary 1/8" white nylon cord.

The weave pattern is:
U2-O2-u1-o1-u1-o1-u1-o1-U2-O2+running part

U = "under"
O= "over"

The layout was done on a 10-1/2" cardboard tube using about 30 ft of cord

The edges come out with the thicker double layer of cord while the center area is thinner, roughly this shape:
  ________                               _________
(_________)_____________(__________)
(__________________________________)

This design can be easily slipped on and worked up to a 7 3/4" (195 mm) wrist size

decoding the knot: bights x parts x strands knot 2467

To count the parts on a turks head knot follow one part as it crosses the face of the knot and count the number of "over" and "under" crossings. In this example you can count five crossings and add the one you are following for a total of six.

This design is a "diamond pattern" shown in the Ashley Book of Knots on p. 241, pattern #1350

Homework: why does Ashley call this a diamond pattern? Leave a comment with your answer below.

To count the bights on a turks head knot count the number of places where the cord changes direction on the rim. In this example there are 17 bights.

This design is described as being between a "square" and a "narrow" turks head. It was made to be 7 5/8" (194 mm) inside circumference a comfortable size for a stylish nautical bracelet.

The number of strands or passes is three. The design can be described as a 17 x 6 x 3 corresponding to the number of bights x number of parts x number of strands.

Ella says...

Ella says: "I like these rope bracelets because they don't fall apart. I have some other ones that come undone but not these!"

In the active on-the-go world of a busy pre teen having a quality rope bracelet is important. The last thing you need is for it to come undone while swimming or hanging out with friends.

All WhatKnotShop rope bracelets are made with high quality materials. Each is worked up to a finished shape (except for the DIY kits) ready for the beach. The loose ends are carefully stitched up to prevent fraying and unraveling. This sturdy kid approved construction means that you can have a summer full of fun with your favorite rope bracelet and never worry  about it coming apart.

Here are three new handmade rope bracelets from the summer collection:
Three part teal blue made with smooth texture hand dyed cord.
Five part grey herringbone made with soft twisted cable cord.
Wider nine part ecru herringbone made with un-dyed cotton blend cable cord.

A closeup of the nine part herringbone bracelet showing the distinctive "v" patterns created by the double overlapping weave. The herringbone weave makes an extra stretchy bracelet that can expand to fit over a larger hand but will shrink down to a comfortable snug fit.

"I really like to wear my bracelets all the time, like even when I'm going skiing and I have to pull a sweater on over them."

Find a favorite for your summer...
