nylon hybrid weave turks head knot bracelet 2760

 Two weave patterns are combined in this interesting knot bracelet: Each edge has a herringbone (over 2-under 2) pattern which then shifts to a plain weave in the center.

This design is a "square" turks head with 14 bights and 15 parts.

Here is a related wider design.

The material is a 1/8" high density braided nylon cord which is a nice bright white color. This material is easy to work in the knot and unlike cotton tends to hold it's size without shrinking.

size relaxed:
7" (178 mm) inside circumference
2 1/4" (55 mm) inside diameter
2 3/4" (96 mm) wide

will stretch slightly to about 7 1/2"

The weave pattern is:
U2-O2-u1-o1-u1-o1-u1-o1-U2-O2 which has been doubled to bulk up the size.

custom work 13 part bracelet in black nylon 2714

 I don't see a lot of requests for these wider designs but this was a custom color request for a wide slip on style cuff. The design is similar to these:

both of which were also custom requests...

 This design is made with 2 mm nylon synthetic from a stash of material that came from a KMart store (of all places...) This is made by Wellington and marketed as a "sportsman cord" which might work for a tent stay or possibly a fish stringer...

Comes in 50 ft spools so it's just right for these bigger projects that need about 30 ft of line. This design required a 9" (228 mm) slip-on size. Read about how to measure your hand and estimate your size here: Figuring the fit - how to pick a size that's right for you.

I keep a few of these wider cuffs in stock and can make one to a particular size if needed.

blue beaded two button bracelet 2630

 This one has nothing to do whatever with knotting per-se but appears here anyway as an exercise in beadwork. The glass beads are a random collection predominantly reds and oranges but with a few blue and green and a couple of black opaque beads too.

In the correct lighting the beads glow with color as you can see in this photo. It's a nice effect.

The cord structure is very similar to the one button fabric bracelets. The framing cords are a 1/4" braided nylon hand dyed blue with two buttons and loops. Instead of edge binding the cords as infill the beads are placed between the framing cords and threaded on the four ply nylon. You can see the exposed stitching on the outside edges.

Size is medium-small measuring 7 1/4" (183 mm) inside circumference when closed.

blue grey one button rope bracelet 2615

 Another mostly synthetic scrap-box creation this time in lighter colors.

Outer cord is a bright white nylon, an ecru cotton cord sets off the inner light blue cords and there is a single (very subtle) center strand of green.

Mold size was 7 1/2" finished size about 7 1/4" (183 mm) inside circumference)

The construction technique is shown starting with part one of a seven part tutorial.

 Here you can see the color progression clearly. This is a narrow 7/8" (17 mm) width.

The synthetic materials are low friction compared to the cotton cord which makes the edge binding process much easier. The needle slides through the cords more easily resulting in fewer stab wounds.

Here you can see how the outer framing cord makes the button loop. The binding process squeezes the cords sideways and care must be taken to leave enough slack so the loop will disengage the button. The slippery nylon helps make it easier to pop the button out of the loop as well.               Available here.

black and blue one button rope bracelet 2616

 Here's another product of scrap-box diving made entirely of pieces of paracord and other synthetic materials.
The framing cord is black polyester with a brown plastic button. The infill cords are back paracord, blue nylon, some hand dyed blue nylon (the lighter color), a piece of green nylon from REI and a center of olive drab green.

Synthetics seem to be very compressible as in this bracelet which was about 1 1/2" (43 mm) wide when laid out on the mold but came out only 1" (25 mm) wide.

 The colors are quite vibrant with the blue contrasting strongly with the black and green.

When these are made the cord segments are centered and the loop is positioned at the button loop ends and loose ends are gathered and tied up on the opposite end, then trimmed off. I use three or four long needles to hold everything together while the edge binding is done.

Here's another design with different colors.

I filled in the open loops with a couple of small glass beads. These loops open up as the edge binding is compressed during construction.

Rope bracelet with star knot meridian 1738

This is a complex knotted bracelet project that is based on a pattern developed by Norbert Trupiano and posted on Charles Hamel's  web in the "Nono Tuts" section. You will have to scroll down to the "Bracelet with Star Knot Meridian" headline to read about this one.

The design is made on a pattern grid that has been printed and then placed on a cardboard tube. The cord is then routed on the pattern using pins to hold the shape until the knot is complete.

The image shows a completed knot made from 1.5 mm white nylon braid that has not yet been worked up to final shape. You can see the reverse loops of the star knot clearly in the second photo.

The pvc mold shown in the photos is about 7 1/8" circumference. The knot was laid out on a 10 3/4" cardboard tube using the pattern grid.

This knot resembles a flat sinnit turks head (ABOK #1379) except that it is not really a turks head in the strict definition.

Here's a closeup of the knot worked up to final shape. You can see the star knot in the center of the weave.

white nylon knotted collar large 1798

Give your dog (or your friend) the comfort and style of a traditional handwoven collar. This design features a double monkey fist toggle and loop closure. The bright white nylon is sanitary and soft. The weave is flexible and non binding.

This collar is made with two pieces of 1/8" nylon braided cord. The monkey fist knots are tied in the center of each piece, then the collar is woven with the slack ends.


size is 17 1/2" (444 mm). Smaller sizes are available as well.

The four part weave is friendly and flexible and the collar can be washed and sanitized if needed.

Dip dyed nylon turks head bracelets 1693

Nylon braided cord that has had the core fibers removed leaving only the outer braid dip dyed in a navy blue dye bath. This renders the cord very soft and flexible.

The color infuses the nylon fibers in a progressive gradient from dark blue to light blue to white

Size is "small" (6 3/8 in/163 mm) stretch is minimal to about 7 in/178 mm

Wide triple herringbone weave rope bracelet made with a single piece of 1/8" (3 mm) nylon braid.

Weave design is 1-3-3-3-3-3-3-1 single overlap or locked edge with three over - three under in center

Blue rope GEOmetry bangle 1449

A wedge section rope bangle bracelet made with very soft blue nylon cord. The white flecks are the four ply waxed nylon binding thread.

This bangle is made in five layers from a single piece of braided cord. Each layer is bound together horizontally then vertically with the nylon thread.

The nylon cord is very soft and low density so this bangle is flexible although it holds it's shape. The stitching creates slight distortions in the circular shape.

Size is medium about 8" (203 mm) inside circumference.

This is very similar to the white rope GEOmetry bangle 1640.

herringbone weave bracelet in white nylon cord 1489

A 50 ft hank of flawless nylon cord and an afternoon is all that is needed to weave this massive herringbone knot. (OK and the pattern of course...)


This big cuff is 33 bights and 17 parts doubled and drawn up to a firm shape. It measures about 8 3/4" (223 mm) inside circumference and about 2 1/8" (55 mm) wide

The herringbone weave pattern is not as distinctive due to the square aspect of each pair of cords.

triple weave herringbone cuff bracelet 1456

 This is an extra wide weave triple herringbone weave turks head knot. The leads pass over three then under three creating four distinct "V" patterns as you can see in the photograph. There are 25 parts and 24 bights making this a "square" pattern. The double layer of strands makes this about 1/4" thick at he edges and uses about 25 ft of 1/8" nylon cord.

This example is a relaxed 8 7/8" (225 mm) inside circumference. This weave design can easily be worked up to a smaller diameter as the nylon is quite smooth and there is only a single strand to chase through the knot.

The knot can also crush down to a smaller diameter without removing any slack.

macrame bracelet w money fist knot toggle 1176

Square knot single row pattern macrame toggle bracelet made with bright white nylon cord. A traditional look with a small monkey fist knot which serves as a toggle to hold the bracelet closed. This bracelet is made from a single piece of 2.3 mm nylon cord using a square knot pattern.

Size is 7 7/8" (201 mm) inside circumference about 5/8" (15 mm) wide.

blue on blue nylon ankle bracelet 1387

Recently a customer requested a special color anklet similar to this design but made out of a blue cord. I had three colors already made up: light blue (left), lilac (center), and dark blue (right) were offered as possibilities. She chose the light and dark blue.
This is 1/8" nylon/synthetic braid that has been treated in a dye bath. Most of the dye washes out leaving a very subtle color. The nylon material has a natural transparency which highlights the color that does remain.


Here's the ankle bracelet in it's expanded form ready to ship. The two cords have been laid parallel in a 22x9x2 plain weave design with the ends left loose. The inside circumference is approx. 12" to enable it to fit over the foot. The slack is then worked out to reduce the diameter and make a comfortable size. Nylon will shrink very slightly (much less than cotton cord) when wet.

white nylon cuff bracelet 441

White 1/8" nylon braided cord is used to build these super wide cuffs. The weave pattern is a 13 x 19 x 2 double diamond. The nylon does not shrink like cotton but does absorb some water so it take a set after a few months of wear. This example is 7 1/2" (191 mm) inside circumference and 2 1/4" (59 mm) wide.

Square sennit braid flexible bangles 131 144 145

This is a re-post of some work in sennit braiding. (click here to see original post ) Three examples are shown here the smaller of the three at left. The bracelet is made from eight interwoven strands starting with a four part grommet. The direction reverses and then there are four interweaves. The reverse loop is positioned under the bead which terminates the knot.

This is the "large" size about 8 5/8" (218 mm) 
The material is a high strength dacron/nylon mix used by sailmakers to make leech tensioning lines.

And the "larger" size about 10" (254 mm). As you can see they all are about the same (colored beads are different on each) Size is controlled by how many bights are made in the grommet and can vary from just a few to a huge number. Think napkin ring all the way up to hatband size.
