Most of the hand dyed cord I use is cotton but every now and then it's fun to see how well color takes to the synthetics. Some dyes are well suited like this darker teal which saturates the nylon braid quite nicely. The natural shiny finish on the nylon fibers add to the effect.

This is a 12x5x3 double diamond plain weave bracelet made with 1/8" (3 mm) cord. The dye is a  water-based RIT applied in a stovetop boil to a hank of the nylon.

A wide rope bracelet made with high density braided synthetic cord that has a really pleasing color mix. The braided material is quite stiff and dense so the bracelet assumes a naturally stiff shape when worked up on the mold.

lighthouse red rope bracelet 2822

 Sometimes the simplest thing is the strongest design like for example this lighthouse red turks head knot bracelet made from 3 mm cord.

The weave design is a 12 bight double diamond pattern so the work up process produces a nice symmetrical shape without having to compensate for cord diameter. This example is a "small" size 6 3/4" (172 mm) inside diameter. Like most of these designs this one can stretch out to about  7 1/2"

 The five part weave is wider and is further emphasized by the three strands of cord  resulting in a full 1 1/2" (37 mm) width.

This cord material is a smooth braided cotton product that takes the dye evenly and retains it's soft texture when dried out.

small black para cord turks head knot bracelet 1445

Parachute cord or paracord as it is a popular material for survival bracelets. It also works well for turks head knot bracelets since it is an inherently elastic material and very easy to work with. The smooth braided cover slide easily through the knot during construction and enables the bracelet to flex when slipping it on.

This is an example of a very small size THB made with a left over piece of black paracord. The inside circumference is 5 1/2"(138 mm) but it will stretch out to about 6 1/4" (165 mm) allowing the wearer to slip it over the hand then relax back to it's natural size.

First one, then another a matched pair of custom cuffs 1329

A customer contacted me recently looking for a particular design in a black and grey combination. Upon receiving the order he immediately ordered a second bracelet of the same design. Here you can see the the results:  a handsome pair of hands with five part turks head bracelets.


The black cord is a polyester blend while the center is a cotton cord hand dyed to a light silver grey color. Getting the fit correct involved providing one of the bracelets with loose ends. This enabled the wearer to slip on the unfinished bracelet then carefully remove the slack to get a comfortable size.


You can measure your hands using this blog post as a guide. When you know your size you can shop the online venues Etsy ArtFire or Zibbet  for the right color and weave design. You may also make a request for a special size if you don't find exactly what you are looking for.

Three small rope bracelets made for a special order. Two are blue-green blended colors, one is simple black. All three are 12x5x3 weave design using 3 mm cord. This produces a nicely proportioned small size slip on bracelet for younger people. The inside circumference is 5 1/2" (141 mm). These have just a bit of built in stretch.

Here is a smaller 12 bight x 5 part x 3 strand bracelet made with 3 mm cord braided. This example has been worked up to a finished condition and measures 2" inside diameter roughly 6" inside circumference. The weave is about 1 1/8" wide.

This size would work well for a child or an adult with a smaller hand.

This design can also be left in a more relaxed condition which would enable placement over a larger hand.

The loose ends shown in the photos illustrate the fact that each of these bracelets is made with a single piece of cord.

This is a smaller three strand bracelet done in custom dyed cotton. The two outer strands are teal blue and the center is sea green.

Inside diameter is 2" and it's 1 3/8" wide so this would be an adult "small" size. Bracelet will stretch slightly and will shrink when wet.

Ends are stitched to prevent unravelling.
