disc bangle bracelet 1451

This design is a variation on two traditional craft techniques: Wrapping a fiber core with floss to create a colorful pattern and basket making. The piece starts out with a spiral coil of soft braided cotton cord which is secured by use of nylon thread. This forms a flat circular base which is similar to traditional basket construction. The resulting disc is then wrapped with cotton floss one part at a time to build the colored pattern.
In this example the center of the bracelet is left in the natural cotton color.
The design also recalls the flat beaded necklaces made by the Masai people of Kenya although is is not an attempt to duplicate their work. Read more about Masai Village Experience and the masai tribe and see a couple of photos of their beadwork.

clothesline bangle with beads n' floss 1450

This chunky bangle style bracelet is made with un-dyed clothesline and other cotton and synthetic cords. The cords have been loosely bound together on a tapered mold to form the layered shape of the bangle. The beads are then worked in between the cords and bound in place with four ply nylon thread. As the nylon thread is used to secure the beads the cord stiffens up to hold it's shape.

Cotton floss is used to wrap some of the exposed cords adding funky color.
The result is ...? Well it's different and not subtle. It weighs about 1 1/2 oz and is a little over 8" inside circumference. Reminds me of the heavier bangles made in white metal from the Indian subcontinent. The cotton clothesline is a more friendly feel than metal and somewhat easier to work with.

yellow, orange and gold cotton fiber Möbius bracelet 1400

This is another in an occasional series of experiments with creating fiber wrapped pieces. This one is made from braided cotton clothesline wrapped with cotton floss. The colors are bright canary yellow, gold, and bright tangerine orange. The clothesline is stitched together with nylon thread before wrapping to provide stability. It's three strands and they are constructed in a Möbius strip geometry out of a single piece of cord.
Size is extra large measuring 9 1/4" (234 mm) inside circumference.

Triad collection on ArtFire

Good things come in threes according to Teri the artisan behind STEMDesigns in this ArtFire collection entitled Triad. Stem Designs offers one of kind Handmade Artisan jewelry in silver, copper and other materials.
Among the good things in this collection I like the Three wheel thrown nesting bowls for the kitchen in black with green made by ugabugabowls located in Bothell, WA. Check out her cat Buster and the other fine work in her studio.
For pure comic joy I have to go with the Three Seagulls By The Bay photograph which captures the vacant arrogance of seagulls perched on a rail. Lesley Payne  has a photography studio filled with textured compositions of high graphic impact ranging from realistic to the abstract.

The featured item in this collection is three blue & grey fiber wrapped soft bangles made with hand dyed cotton cord fibers. See more of these in the Fiber Wrapped Jewelry section of my ArtFire shop.

cherry strawberry grape cantaloup soft bracelet 1267

Colorful soft cotton floss is used to wrap this multi-part flexible cord bracelet to create a splash of color. The core is made from braided  cotton cord (clothesline). The loops are formed on a mold and the ends are bound together with high strength nylon thread. The cotton floss is then applied to the loops. The result is this stack of soft bangles connected together.
The inside circumference is about 8 1/2" (191 mm) making is a medium to large size. There is no clasp or toggle to get in the way. Everything is technically waterproof but long term immersion is not recommended.

A similar design was posted back in November and is available in the fiber wrapped jewelry section of the ArtFire venue.

Fiber wrapped jewelry - An offshoot of the knot business that came about from a creative use of the leftover pieces of cord that are created when a knot bracelet is made. These are "up cycled" slip on bracelets and choker style necklaces made by wrapping deconstructed string and floss around core materials.

Beaded rope bracelets - Another offshoot of the knot tying work that has recently expanded into other experimental forms. Some bracelets incorporate beads in traditional turks head knot designs like the example shown on the left while other pieces are more about the beads.

Extra wide cuffs - These are the most dramatic wide slip on cuff bracelets available. Each one is a carefully made knot requiring many hours of work to lay out and then work up to the finished shape. This example is ready to slip on your wrist and tighten up to a comfortable custom fit.

new fiber wrapped bracelets and necklaces

Three flexible cotton fiber wrapped bracelets 180

Nylon cord is worked in a three part grommet, the ends are left loose but feathered to overlap slightly. The cotton fiber is from up cycled cut off ends of three part cotton cord that has been un-laid revealing the dye penetration pattern.

Ends of the cotton strands are placed between plies of the grommet then tightly would around the core similar to the craft of serving a piece of heavy line. The rhyme and rule is: "worm and parcel with the lay; turn and serve the other way"

This item is available for sale here.

This on is a muli-color flexible bracelet cat no 107 made with some grey cotton with finer cotton floss added as accent colors.

This item is available for sale here.

The loose ends are passed inside the grommet and tensioned then cut off flush with the surface.

wrapped irregular fiber bangle - red and grey #101

What to do with all the leftover materials from making turks heads? There are always lengths of cord in different colors that are cut off after working the knots up to a finished shape.

The core of these are nylon cord worked into a grommet and then secured or wrapped with cotton cord left over from the other projects. The cord is unwound or unwrapped to make it workable and show the variegated color patterns created by the dye penetrating the cord during the dying process.

See the collections on the Etsy site. Individual pieces may be ordered or you can get an entire set of three. Lots of different color combinations as I'm using whatever is available in the workshop.
