three new )strata( design bracelets 1545, 1546, 1547

New slip-on style mixed fiber bracelet that has been  laid out and is ready to be finished. The blue and purple cords are synthetic, the white and teal is cotton, the olive drab is a piece of paracord, and the black is a polyester.
The waxed thread loops show how the tensioning thread is placed across the grain of the cords and left in a relaxed condition. (1545)

When drawn up firmly the width of this bracelet will be about 3/4".

This bracelet is available in my Zibbet shop. Check out more like this in the design section or click here to send me a message or make a special request.

This bracelet is made with pieces of heavy clothesline and hand dyed cotton cord scraps. The tensioning thread is placed across the cord, then tightened. A pair of rectangular glass beads are positioned in the center and held in place with the waxed thread.(1546)
See this listing in the Etsy Shop. To request a custom made bracelet like these please use the Etsy convo utility and reference this blog entry.

This design is made from a pair of cotton cord scraps, one hand dyed grey, the other a natural white. The cords were laid out parallel and wrapped around the PVC mold. The tensioning thread has been placed and the bracelet is ready to draw up into it's final form.

Here's the finished bracelet (1547)

three sailor bracelets in copper green 702, 703, 704

A set of three classic turks head sailor bracelets made with hand dyed twisted cotton cord. The color is a copper green made by diluting the concentrated dye packet and limiting the time the cord remains immersed in the dye solution.

It's pretty amazing how much color range is available from a single colored dye packet. Even within the cord hank as it is immersed there are slight variations in color. Some areas take a bit more pigment, others less which creates a pleasing variation

The color will continue aging as the bracelet is worn. Repeated wettings can cause the color to fade even more giving the bracelet that "forever" look.

Sizing:
The small one is 14 bights, child or tween
The medium one is 17 bights, older teens and women
The large one is 20 bights, adult males and knuckle draggers (guys you know who you are...)

Each is made with three passes and worked to a firm shape. There remains some stretch in the material as the cord is naturally elastic.

These were photographed with the working ends in place although there isn't much slack to work out of the weave.

A note for the photography class: the background is actually a grey cardboard although the color in the photos appears to be light purple. White balance was set prior to the shoot with the light sources fully warmed up. (3600K CFL lamps)

crazy cotton fiber bracelet 663

What to do with the cut-off bits of colored cord? As an inveterate hoarder it's impossible to throw these pieces out so they accumulate in a box until the moment when inspiration overtakes reason.

Here's an experimental piece that combines somewhat randomly chosen bits of hand dyed colored cords in a grommet style lash-up. As you can see the ends are intentionally left free to fray. The cords are sewn together with nylon thread to prevent total entropy.

choker and bangle set hand dyed fiber wrapped 163

These fiber wrapped bracelets and necklace are made with nylon cord cores that have been wrapped with hand dyed cotton fibers. Some of the fibers are made from pieces of dyed three ply cord that have been unwound.

The dye penetrates the cord from the outside during immersion in the dye bath leaving the interior of the cord white. This accounts for the differences in color and the spiral pattern seen on some regions of pieces.

Choker style necklace is closed with a small monkey fist knot and loop.

black on black turks head knot bracelet with beads

Black cord, black beads make this well, black on black! The cord is 3 mm polyester and the beads are plastic so it is all organic but not grown in a field or made in a furnace. Yeah maybe this isn't for everyone  but there are other offerings that are made of natural cotton and glass. Look around!

Here you can see the beads placed in the weave showing on both inside and outside the bracelet.

This is on the large side of "medium" at 7 3/4" inside circumference right for a larger adult hand. Smaller and larger sizes are available by request.

Part 8: Completing the double

Most of the slack is worked through. There remain some strands to double up.

ready to try this?
bulk cord in white and hand dyed colors available here

Pop the knot off the mold and use the fid to complete the doubling. This makes it easier to flex the knot fabric and thread the cord.

Here the knot is completely doubled but is a bit messy with uneven tension and shape.

A top view of the completly doubled knot.

At this point the knot is placed on another mold and worked up to the final, even tension using the round jaw pliers to grab the individual strands.

herringbone weave sailors knot rope bracelet 168

This all grey cotton herringbone weave slip-on rope bracelet is made from 3 mm cotton cord. The finished size is 2 3/8" (61 mm) diameter by 7 1/2" (190 mm) inside circumference by 5/8" (14 mm) wide will fit an adult medium to large hand.

A "narrow" turks head of 34b x 5l x 2s meaning that the number of bights (34) is much greater than the number of parts (5) giving this bracelet a hoop-like geometry.

Lightweight, flexible and subtle color make this a great summer accessory.
Expect some shrinkage when wet, the ends are stitched to prevent unraveling.
