Copper green color hand dyed on a soft laid #72 cotton cord gives this a somewhat muted finished color. The cord spent only a few minutes in a diluted dye bath before getting rinsed and dried.

The material comes off the ball in a color that has not been heavily bleached. This light grey blends well with the blues and greens to achieve these subtle finished colors.

Weave design is 17 x 5 x 3
Finished size is adult "medium"

Apostle Island cruise

Anchored just west of South Twin Island looking north into Lake Superior at sunset September 5, 2010. A very nice looking sloop poses for a chamber of commerce style image. The tip of Rocky Island is visible on the left.

custom work for kids 816

Every now and then I receive a request for a custom piece for a younger person. I like making these for kids as it continues the tradition of having something cool and special that is yours alone.

This is a special request for someone who was passionate about purple but needed a smaller size than was offered in the online shop.

I had a bit of the purple cord remaining from the original dye batch which was long enough to make this 12 x 5 x 3 double diamond design.

So don't be shy about asking for a child sized version of work that is listed in the online shops. Most of the pieces offered can be made in smaller sizes that will fit younger kids as well as tweens.

Salsa 2-4 fest at Afton Alps

There is a first time for everything and this last weekend was my first time at a mountain bike race. The event was sponsored by Salsa http://www.salsacycles.com/salsa24fest/ and featured two races: an 8 hour affair and a 24 hour knock your socks off enduro. Now extreme mountain bikers may appear intimidating but they are some of the friendliest people around. Watching these committed athletes riding in 90 degree heat all day and into the night was to say the least, impressive.


WhatKnotShop had a vendor both along with several other Minnesota based vendors including Allison pot pour ri jewelry design on Etsy. She offers finely crafted work in wood including rings, pendants, and earrings. Her work is both beautiful and quite affordable. 


Another artist who displayed her work was emily floyd. Her website is here but for now you are re-directed to her blog which is here. Emily creates pieces from high quality leather, rubber from bike inner tubes, and other reclaimed materials. I especially like her use of the inner tubes to create inside-out earrings. She also makes these cool bracelets from rubber and reclaimed leather samples that have a cut fringe on one side and a smooth fold on the other. 


Erica's Etsy shop reinvented wonders has the coolest colorful bibs made from colorful recycled signage fabrics. For the many families that attended this event Erica offers just the right thing to catch the attention of the younger set as well as the food that seems to avoid their mouths.

This is another herringbone weave pattern made from a very low density hardware store variety cotton cord.  The dye is a dark blue color. The knot is worked up to a firm shape and the soft cord keeps the resulting bracelet flexible.

In this view you can see the braiding pattern of the cord. It's pretty open and prone to snagging. The material takes the dye very well though.

delicate designs made with small material

A herringbone weave design using 1.5 mm high density nylon cord.


This is a 34 bight design but due to the small diameter of the material it measures only 6 1/4" inside circumference, about the right size for a child or young teen.


This type of high tech nylon cord was found at an Eastern Mountain Sports EMS shop. Many outdoor gear suppliers offer these types of high grade nylon cords in all kinds of color combinations. This one happens to be a classic red/black mix

Here we see a typical three part common turks head weave using the 1.5 mm high density nylon cord. This one is a bit larger measuring 7" inside diameter and available here:

The flat or common weave is clearly visible in this view. 


These smaller materials create a much smaller scale weave pattern which goes well with smaller hands or for those who like a more refined look.

natural look soft mixed fiber knot bracelet 812

Natural cotton mixed fiber material for knot bracelets makes a relaxed finish to the fibers and lends a more "worn" look to the finished piece. This example is made from a soft laid #48 cord. The design is a 22x5x3 weave pattern.

 The size is 8" inside circumference which fits many size hands. The bracelet will stretch slightly. Shrinkage is likely to be less than a 100% cotton material.
